Star Watchmen eBook Ben Bova
Recently purchased the new reprint of Ben Bova's The Star Conquerors and enjoyed it for what it was, Bova's first major novel. The Star Watchmen is a later novel, by forty years, and it is fairly near the level of the first novel. Good plot, characterizations are a bit shallow, and the background history of the empire is only lightly touched upon. I like Bova's novels, have really enjoyed the Grand Tour series especially, so I was a bit disappointed with the shallowness of this novel. It mirrors tone and pace of Bova's first novel thus it makes a good bookend to forty years of generally good SF. I would ask the publisher/printer of these novels to please go back through the text and clean up the grammar. Some of it is quite atrocious and some is quite repetitive like the failure to put in apostrophes on possessive nouns/pronouns. The size was nice, not as small as the standard paperback but not as large as a standard SF soft cover book. For us older SF consumers, it was easy on the eyes and hands, with a larger font size and flexible enough so I didn't crack the book's spine like I usually do with paperbacks. I'm looking forward to Bova's next novels coming later this year and would enjoy another novel in the Star Watchmen universe that is as richly detailed in background and characterization as the Grand Tour series.Product details

Star Watchmen eBook Ben Bova Reviews
Characters were hard to really identify with and a bit dull. Skipped a lot of details which made the story a fast read but flat
great book
One of my favorites since I was twelve (many years ago) was Ben Bova's Star Conquerors. Finally, I have read the sequel and it is also great!
One of Bova's early works, but great storytellling nonetheless. It's fun to watch how his writing has improved over the years. Well worth the read.
I read this as a boy along with Star Conquerors. I loved both a the story. However, I will admit I was left wondering where the story went after Vorgens left Shinar. Well worth the time.
Good war story
Ben Bova is usually a safe bet when it comes to SciFi. His books are generally well considered and well written. What sets these ones apart is the Space Opera feel. You really need to have your tongue planted firmly in your cheek, but these are definitely a good read.
Some of the characterisation was a little shallow, but really it's an escapist novel. (Series of novels, really, if you count the others in the group) and manages to fill that role very nicely. I liked it.
